Teams are using it to draft requirements, summarize design reviews, generate software code, write verification protocols, analyze risks, and even help prepare regulatory documentation. The productivity gains can be impressive…But there’s a question many organizations haven’t stopped to ask:
“Is AI actually improving product development—or is it simply producing more work, faster?”
That’s an important distinction.
AI Doesn’t Improve Processes
…It Multiplies Them. Organizations often assume that adding AI will automatically increase efficiency. In reality, AI amplifies whatever system it finds:
- If your requirements are inconsistent, AI can (and will) generate inconsistent requirements faster.
- If traceability is fragmented, AI can (and will) make fragmented documentation easier to produce.
- If quality reviews happen too late, AI may simply create more material for reviewers to evaluate – making them happen even later.
On the other hand, organizations with strong workflows, integrated quality systems, and disciplined engineering practices often see AI become a genuine force multiplier. The difference isn’t in the technology… the difference is in the product development system.
What Does AI Effectiveness Look Like?
Successful medical device companies don’t measure AI by:
- Number of prompts
- Number of users
- Hours supposedly saved
Instead, they ask questions like:
- Did quality improve?
- Was rework reduced?
- Are requirements more consistent?
- Is traceability easier to maintain?
- Are reviews faster without sacrificing compliance?
- Can we defend AI-assisted work during an audit?
Those are measures of AI effectiveness, not simply AI adoption…because these are business outcomes.
Four Questions Every Medical Device Leader Should Ask
Before expanding AI across engineering and quality teams, ask:
- Are we solving meaningful product development problems?
- Do we know how we’ll measure success?
- Does our quality system support AI-assisted development?
- Can we demonstrate appropriate human oversight and evidence?
If the answer to those questions is “not yet,” the opportunity isn’t necessarily to slow down AI. It’s to improve the system that AI is accelerating.
